BUYING MUNICIPAL & WASTE TRUCKS FOR AFRICA

Practical Answers Before You Specify, Import or Operate a Truck

Buying a municipal vehicle is not only about choosing a tank or body size. The truck must suit your waste stream, collection route, local bins, road conditions, steering position, import requirements and maintenance resources. Below are practical answers for buyers, contractors and public-sector teams in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

If your project is already at the tender or budgeting stage, send us the destination country and city, required quantity, waste type, preferred capacity and any tender specification. We will review the requirements before recommending a configuration.

Choosing the right truck

Which garbage truck is right for our collection route?

The answer depends on the waste type, daily tonnage, collection frequency, road width, travel distance and unloading point. A compactor truck is usually suitable for mixed municipal solid waste collected door to door. A hook-lift truck suits sites using detachable containers. A self-loading truck can serve smaller collection points, while a sealed kitchen-waste truck is better for wet organic waste and leak-control requirements. Send us your route details and current bin or container sizes before selecting a model.

What information do you need before recommending a truck?

Please provide the destination country and city, waste type, expected tonnes per day, collection distance, road conditions, local bin sizes, preferred body capacity, steering position, fuel preference and number of vehicles. For sweepers and water trucks, also tell us the road width, water source and required working functions. If you have a tender document, send the complete technical specification rather than only the requested truck name.

Can you build a municipal truck to our tender specification?

Yes, subject to technical review and chassis availability. We can compare the tender requirements with the proposed chassis, body, hydraulic system, safety features and accessories, then prepare a line-by-line compliance response. Requirements that affect legal axle loads, vehicle stability or homologation must be resolved before production. The final agreed specification should be attached to the quotation or sales contract.

Is a 12 m3 garbage truck the same in every country?

No. Body volume alone does not determine how much waste a truck can legally or safely carry. Payload depends on chassis gross vehicle weight, axle limits, body weight, waste density and local road rules. Two trucks described as "12 m3" may have different usable payloads. We recommend selecting the chassis and body as one system and checking the expected waste density before confirming capacity.

Can the lifting mechanism work with our existing waste bins?

It can be configured for common bin types, but bin compatibility should never be assumed from volume alone. Please send the bin capacity, dimensions, lifting points and clear photographs. This is especially important for 120/240-litre wheelie bins, 660/1,100-litre communal bins and locally fabricated containers. We will confirm the required lifting mechanism in the technical specification before production.

Do you offer left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive trucks?

Configuration depends on the destination market and the selected chassis. Tell us the country before we quote: Nigeria and Ghana generally use left-hand-drive vehicles, while Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe generally use right-hand-drive vehicles. Chassis availability, local registration rules and maintenance support must also be checked before a model is confirmed.

Can you configure trucks for rough roads, dust and hot weather?

Yes, suitable options can be reviewed according to the route and climate. These may include chassis and tyre selection, ground-clearance considerations, dust protection, cooling requirements, corrosion protection, reinforced working components and easier-to-service hydraulic layouts. Tell us whether the truck will work on paved urban roads, unpaved collection routes, landfill access roads or steep terrain. Not every option is available on every chassis.

Should we choose a diesel or electric sanitation truck?

Diesel is often the more practical choice where routes are long, charging is unavailable or vehicles work multiple shifts. Electric trucks may suit predictable urban routes with reliable charging, planned maintenance and sufficient downtime. Before recommending an electric model, we need the daily distance, working hours, payload, ambient temperature, charging power and local technical support plan. The decision should be based on total operating conditions, not only fuel cost.

Compliance and import documents

How long does SONCAP take for a truck shipment to Nigeria?

The processing time depends on the applicable certification route, accepted documents, testing or inspection, and current requirements. It should not be treated as a guaranteed lead time for a complete truck order. Please ask your Nigerian importer and authorised conformity provider to confirm the current SONCAP process and timetable before shipment.

Can you ship the truck first and complete SONCAP after departure?

Do not plan the order on that basis. SON states that SONCAP is an offshore, pre-shipment conformity process and cannot normally be completed after the consignment has left the country of origin. Before shipment, the exporter, importer, inspection body and clearing agent should confirm the applicable product classification, certification route and required documents.

Do trucks for Kenya or Tanzania need pre-shipment inspection?

Pre-shipment conformity or vehicle inspection requirements may apply. Kenya operates a PVoC framework for imported goods and vehicles, while Tanzania uses a PVoC programme for regulated imports. The exact requirement depends on the vehicle, HS classification, condition and current rules. We will provide available manufacturer and vehicle documents, but the importer should confirm the latest process with the national standards authority and a licensed clearing agent before shipment.

What documents can you provide for customs clearance?

The document set is confirmed for each order and may include the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin when required, chassis and engine identification, product specification, test or inspection documents and other export paperwork. Destination-specific certificates are handled according to the applicable programme. Your clearing agent should confirm the final list before shipment because customs, standards and registration documents differ by country.

Are your factory certificates enough to register the truck locally?

Factory management-system certificates and product documentation support technical review, but they do not automatically replace destination-country conformity assessment, homologation, customs clearance or vehicle registration. The Chengli knowledge base includes ISO management certifications and specialist vehicle production qualifications, but each vehicle still needs the documentation required by the importing country. Ask your local authority or clearing agent to review the proposed model before production.

Quotation, production and inspection

What is included in your truck quotation?

A useful quotation should identify the chassis, engine, steering position, emission level, body capacity, major materials, hydraulic and control systems, included accessories, quantity, delivery basis, payment terms, estimated production schedule and quotation validity. Freight, inspection, certification, inland delivery, taxes and local registration should be shown as included or excluded rather than left unclear.

What is your minimum order quantity?

A single vehicle can be considered, subject to the selected chassis, body configuration and production availability. We confirm the order quantity and commercial terms in the written quotation. For larger fleet orders, phased production may be possible.

If you are planning a fleet purchase, please let us know:

Will all trucks share the exact same chassis and body specifications?

Is batch/staged delivery acceptable for your project timeline?

Sharing these details upfront helps us lock in chassis procurement early, fast-track pre-shipment inspections, prepare local spare parts packages, and arrange operator training for your local team.

How long does production take?

Production time is confirmed for the selected vehicle and approved specification; a generic body-assembly estimate is not a reliable delivery promise.

Overall lead time depends on chassis availability, body type, custom fabrication, total volume, and mandatory pre-shipment inspections and certifications. A firm production timeline is issued only after technical specifications are fully approved and commercial terms are confirmed. Municipal tenders and bespoke superstructure builds may require additional fabrication time compared to standard off-the-shelf configurations. The agreed delivery schedule, along with the exact milestone marking the start of production (such as advance payment clearance or chassis arrival), will be clearly documented in the sales contract.

Can we inspect the truck before shipment?

Yes. Factory inspection, photographs, operating videos and third-party pre-shipment inspection can be arranged as agreed for the order. The inspection scope should cover the approved specification, chassis and engine numbers, dimensions, main functions, safety devices, leakage checks, supplied tools and spare parts. If an independent inspection agency is required, include it in the contract before production.

Can you paint the truck in our municipal colours and add our logo?

Yes, colour and branding can normally be customized. Send the colour reference, vector logo, wording and placement requirements before production. Reflective markings, safety labels and operating instructions should comply with local requirements. Artwork approval should be completed before painting to avoid delays or rework.

Shipping and inland delivery

Can you deliver a garbage truck to Lusaka?

Yes, we can prepare a quotation that includes the sea leg and, where available, inland transport to Lusaka. Because Zambia is landlocked, the route normally involves arrival at a regional seaport followed by road or rail transit. The final route, border documentation, insurance and unloading arrangements depend on the carrier and importer. Ask for the quotation to show the vehicle price, ocean freight and inland delivery as separate items.

Can you deliver to Nairobi, Harare or Bulawayo instead of only to a seaport?

Inland delivery can be evaluated for these destinations. We need the exact delivery address, number and size of vehicles, preferred port or route, and whether the importer has a local clearing agent. Inland transport is quoted separately because border procedures, permits, escorts, carrier availability and fuel costs can change. The delivery point and transfer of risk must be written clearly in the sales contract.

How are municipal trucks shipped from China?

The method depends on vehicle dimensions, quantity, port and sailing availability. Complete trucks may move by roll-on/roll-off service, container where dimensions permit, flat rack or breakbulk service. We compare the practical options after confirming the final dimensions. Before booking, we also agree on fuel level, loose accessories, spare-parts packing, protective measures, shipping marks and the document cut-off date.

Can you quote delivery to our site rather than only FOB China?

We can review factory, Chinese-port, destination-port or inland-delivery quotation options, depending on the country and available carriers. A destination quotation should state exactly what is included: ocean freight, insurance, port charges, transit transport, import duty, taxes, customs clearance and unloading are not automatically the same thing. Your local clearing agent should review the landed-cost assumptions before you place the order.

Spare parts, training and after-sales support

Do you provide spare parts after delivery?

Yes. We can identify parts from the vehicle model, chassis number and body-system records, then arrange a quotation and shipment. For faster support, send a photo of the part, its part number, the fault description and the vehicle identification details. Availability and delivery time depend on whether the item is a chassis part, body-system part or custom component.

What spare parts should we order with the first truck?

For remote or fleet operations, we recommend agreeing on a start-up spare-parts package before shipment. The list may include filters and service consumables, hydraulic seals and hoses, switches or sensors, selected electrical items, wearing parts for the lifting mechanism, and truck-specific tools. The correct package depends on the chassis, body type, duty cycle and availability of compatible chassis parts in your country.

What after-sales support is available if the truck develops a fault?

Start by sending the vehicle identification, operating hours or mileage, photos, video and a clear description of the fault. Our team can use this information to identify whether the issue relates to the chassis, hydraulic system, electrical controls or body equipment and recommend the next diagnostic step. Remote guidance and parts supply can be arranged; any on-site service, response time and cost must be agreed for the destination and stated in the sales contract.

Can our local mechanics maintain the truck?

Routine chassis service is easier when the selected brand has parts and service familiarity in your market. The body system uses mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical components that a qualified commercial-vehicle workshop can usually inspect with the correct manuals and parts information. We recommend involving your maintenance team during specification review and arranging operating and maintenance guidance before the vehicle enters service.

Do you provide operating manuals and training?

Operating and maintenance documentation can be supplied for the confirmed vehicle. Remote handover guidance, operating videos or agreed training can also be arranged according to the project. For fleet orders, nominate operators and mechanics before delivery and include the required training language, location and scope in the contract. Training should cover safe operation, daily inspection, lubrication, hydraulic precautions and basic fault reporting.

What warranty do you provide?

Warranty coverage must be confirmed in the quotation and sales contract because chassis and body components may have different terms, limits and exclusions. Ask for the warranty period, start date, covered components, claim procedure, required maintenance records and responsibility for labour, travel and freight. Do not rely on a general website statement for a specific vehicle purchase; the signed contract is the controlling document.
